Doctoral Degrees Online Are A Good Option For Postgraduate Study

We’ve all seen TV commercials and other forms of advertising for online colleges and universities, but many people are under the impression that these schools only offer bachelor’s degrees.  While it’s true that the vast majority of online students are pursuing undergraduate degrees,  that’s hardly the whole story.

You can certainly earn your graduate degree over the internet; you can even earn doctoral degrees online.  In fact, this may very well be your best option.  Let’s look at some of the reasons you should consider getting an online doctoral degree.

In many cases, getting your Ph.D online may be your only viable option.  That’s because, even though there are literally thousands of colleges and universities in the United States, the number of them that offer the Ph.D is much smaller.  In fact, less than three hundred universities in America offer this degree.  Depending on your chosen field of study, you may not be able to find a suitable brick and mortar school near you, which means you’d have to consider moving.  In many cases the situation would require moving hundreds of miles away from friends and family.  This is a real drawback for many students, and for some it’s an outright impossibility.  In that case, doctoral degrees online are the only real choice they have.

On top of this, you need to consider whether getting your degree from a brick and mortar school is really desirable, or even necessary.  In most doctoral degree programs, you’ll spend the vast majority of the time pursuing your degree on research and writing, not on actually taking classes, unlike lower degrees.  Plus, even if you’re actually on campus, much of your communication with professors and faculty advisors and others will take place via email, not in person.  You can get your question answered just as quickly if you’re a thousand miles away or two blocks from campus.  Finally, there’s the question of money.  There are two considerations here.  First, doctoral degrees online are usually much cheaper than ones earned the traditional way.  Second, it can take 2 to 8 years to earn a Ph.D, and most brick and mortar schools will strongly discourage you from being employed while you work on your degree.  Many strictly forbid it.  Generally speaking, online doctoral programs are more flexible, meaning you’ll be able to have income, and need to borrow much less money, while you’re in school.  For all these reasons, doctoral degrees online are becoming more and more popular, and may well be you best option.
